This English painter was renowned for his embrace of the Pre-Raphaelite painting style and his exploration of ancient Greek mythology in his subjects.
According to legend, Adonis, the Greek god of beauty, desire, and rebirth, met a tragic end while hunting. Rushing to his side, Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans) accidentally cut herself on a thorn, turning the once pure and white rose, symbolizing her, into a brilliant crimson shade stained by her blood. A kiss from the goddess awakened Adonis, perpetuating the eternal circle of life.
